Why Attire Matters

Since ultimately this is your custom portrait you make the decision on attire and creativity.  These are suggestions for a classical, timeless look that will never go out of style.  Attire is where you have control over how you will be remembered in 20, 40, or 100 years.

PORTRAIT SESSION GUIDANCE

Guidelines for Fine Art Portrait Attire

My approach to Artistic portraiture is to help you create an heirloom that will stand the test of time for future generations to admire.  Plan on creating the most elegant portrait that will become a legacy from generation to generation.  Put thought into your portrait and where it will be displayed, so when we capture your beautiful family it exceeds your expectations.  Fine Art portraits continue to be a tradition even when styles change and clothing can draw attention away from your face.  For the best results, ensure your portrait stands the test of time.

Wearing dark or jewel tones and clothing without patterns allows natural beauty to show.   There are exceptions to formal attire when the portraits being created are for children, bridal, beauty or incorporate traditional clothing.

Dark (black, navy, burgundy, dark green, etc.) Tea or full length dress or gown with sleeves (short or long sleeves).  Little or no pattern is preferred.  Classic heels and Jewelry such as diamonds, pearls, etc. are encouraged.  Hair, make-up and nails should be done in natural colors.  A red carpet look is very popular, think timeless and elegant.

Tuxedo, suit or dark jacket, dress shirt, tie and trousers.  Dark jeans with a button down and sport coat are also acceptable.  Ties for men and boys should coordinate.  A one-week-old haircut is perfect but you should be freshly shaven.  Think timeless with a white or blue shirt, add your best tie to round things out nicely.

Dark or jewel toned solid dresses are preferred, but ivory or off white are also acceptable if they are younger. Little to no pattern is best. Young ladies are usually preferred to have short or no sleeves. Nails should be done in a french manicure or in natural colors. Classic jewelry such as diamonds or pearls are encouraged. Avoid too much-exposed skin from sleeveless tops and super short hemlines.

Young men can dress the same as gentlemen, or wear a solid dark sweater or vest with dress pants.  If under 5, a white shirt with bow tie is fine.  Lighter colors are acceptable for younger boys.
